The Dance is Alison G. Bailey's fifth book. Somehow she always manages to steal my heart in the most unexpected ways. I can already guess that our heroine Bryson is going to be criticized for the choices she made in the first part of the story. I thought she was incredibly likeable and relatable. Marriage is difficult and takes a great deal of work. The fact that she was willing to fight so hard for her marriage was inspiring. Do I wish she had made some different decisions along the way? Perhaps, but at the end of the day it was all a part of her journey. Bryson was endearingly awkward at times, especially when she was trying to flirt, and that just made me love her even more.

I am not going to talk much about Bryson's husband Will except to say that I did appreciate the growth of his character. To be honest, I was annoyed with my feelings about him because I wanted to dislike him more than I actually did by the end of the book. I think that is a testament to the quality of Bailey's writing and character development. On the other hand, I can and will talk about Hart all day long. :) Even from those very first moments he spent with Bryson, I felt the spark between the two of them. I had that warm feeling in the pit of my stomach that there was something special about him, and I couldn't wait to get to know him more.

I simply adored everything about Hart. He was fun and flirty (his flirtatious conversations with Bryson made me giggle like a schoolgirl), but my favorite part about him was how he encouraged her to follow her dreams. You could tell he was the kind of person who truly cared about other people. Hart had a very sexy and commanding presence that would have made me feel weak in the knees if I were Bryson. I liked how he made her feel desirable and special. Every woman should have a man like that. Hart supported Bryson no matter what, even when she had to make very difficult decisions.

The relationship between Bryson and Hart was a delicious slow burn. There was simply no denying their pull toward one another. Both grew and changed along the way. I enjoyed watching Hart open up and embrace his feelings for Bryson. As for Bryson, I loved seeing her become more confident. I was in awe of her compassion and the sacrifices that she was willing to make. Once again Bailey crafted a beautiful story full of real characters tackling real issues. While I did shed quite a few tears along the way, I also laughed my butt off (hello Sophie and Doug!) and smiled often. Bailey is a gift storyteller, and I think fans old and new will fall in love with this book just like I did.

Bryson had a lot of learning about herself to do in this book, both in what she was capable of and what she wanted from life. As a high schooler, she met and fell in love with Will. The storybook tale of their romance stood, despite a moment at their senior prom where Bryson faced a possible change to her story, one that would lead to a bad boy rather than her sweet prince. But she wanted the prince and thought she had found him in Will.

Years passed before she ran into that bad boy again, and things had changed for both of them in the meantime. They develop a friendship that fills a gap in both of their lives. Bryson needs an ear and finds it in Hart’s solid presence. But it can’t be easy when your fairytale isn’t as perfect as it looks from the outside, and Bryson struggles with what she wants and needs.

Hart was the bad boy with a heart of gold. I liked him from the moment he spoke at prom, though I didn’t understand his reaction after prom until much later. His own struggles and the way he calmly handles (most of) the challenges that jump out to derail him made me love him even more.

There were times I wanted this story to go a different direction. I struggled with the pacing because I couldn’t stand Will and the way he treated Bryson, even in the beginning. Bryson’s relationship with Will throughout most of the book was a point of frustration for me. It brought so much angst to the story, but it also needed to be that way based on who they were to each other.

When I reached the end, I realized it didn’t matter if the timeline fit what *I* wanted for these characters, it fit for them. There were so many factors involved in Bryson’s decisions that I couldn’t help but feel conflicted as I watched her struggles.

I still would say that the beginning and parts of the end went on longer than I think was necessary. This was a story filled with ups and downs, much like real life. It is unconventional in the treatment of the hero and heroine, but this is one of those hold-on-and-follow types of stories. I wish things could have worked out easier for Bryson and Hart, but overall their story was a great journey.
